Just wanted to let everyone know that Aiden will be having surgery next Thursday on his hemangioma. I''m sure you have all noticed it... it''s that lump which has been growing rapidly in his upper lip. The doctors say that based on how quickly it''s growing and the fact that it should continue to grow for the next 7 months or so, it will get much much bigger if left untreated. Later, as it shrinks back down over the years, it will probably cause some disfigurement of his lip and he will bring it to Kindergarten with him. So we have decided to start laser treatment now.
Luckily, the procedure doesn''t sound that bad. They do have to put him undr anesthesia, but don''t have to intubate him or place an IV. They just mask him down and the whole procedure is done in 5 minutes. They go under his lip with the laser, then inject cortisone and a long-lasting novacaine. The doc says that he will be able to eat normally right away after the procedure. The only bummer part is that it is not a one shot deal. It will take 3-5 surgeries to get it to shrink down completely. But the doc is very positive and does these all the time with babies much younger than Aiden.
Wish us luck and please keep us in your thoughts next Thursday morning.
